Draught Preservationists Scold Chicago Journal
Draught drinkers love peach, broadsheet
--------------------------------------
Chicago Journal Letters, June 20, 2007
I am writing on behalf of the Central Committees of the Ukranian Village Draught Beer Preservation Society and the Logan Square Draught Beer Preservation Society.
I would like to start off by saying that our Societies have been very pleased with the high quality of your publication, the Chicago Journal. Neighborhood draught drinkers look forward to picking up the Journal each week at local taverns and perusing the in-depth local coverage, the well-crafted prose of your reporters, and the thoughtful editorials offered within your pages.
We also appreciate your ongoing reporting of draught preservation issues and events, as area residents wage battle to protect the corner tavern, democracy, tradition and our very way of life.
With this in mind, our Societies were very displeased to learn that the Journal's page colour has changed from a dignified peach to a very ordinary white newsprint. ("So long to the peach," June 7, 2007) And given last fall's format conversion from the grand broadsheet to the sensationalist tabloid, we shudder to think what "improvement" could be next-axing Peter Zelchenko's erudite commentaries to make way for Page Three Girls?
The medium does much to communicate about the quality of the product. Just as draught drinkers can easliy spot tasteless lagers made of adjuncts due to the aluminum container, thoughtful readers rightfully avoid tabloids that are harbingers of yellow journalism and poor quality prose.
On behalf of thousands of neighborhood draught drinkers, we urge you to not only restore the peach pages, but to also bring back the broadsheet!

Interim Secretary
