The Manifesto of the Logan Square Draught Beer Preservation Society

Draught beer and public houses have played a crucial role in the American democratic experiment. The American Revolution was planned and fomented in colonial taverns, with frothy mugs in hand.

Today, barrelled-beer and taverns continue to be central in building dynamic, vital communities, offering public gathering spaces and promoting hospitality.

The Logan Square Draught Beer Preservation Society works to further our participatory democracy by protecting beer drinkers' rights and advocating for improved public beer drinking facilities in Chicago's Logan Square community.

The Society's Central Committee has adopted the following 'Draught' Action Agenda for 2005:

Bring Back the Draught Campaign

Each Logan Square tavern shall dedicate a minimum of six taps and purvey a diverse selection of quality ales and lagers to the community. All package stores shall strive to obtain tavern status in order to offer fresh, barrel-beer service.

Land Use and Zoning

No Logan Square residence shall be further than 175 meters from a public house tap.

Honest Weights and Measures

Logan Square shall adopt the Imperial Pint as the standard serving container for all local draught ale and lager service.

Logan Square Home Brewers Guild

Recognizing that many of America's founding fathers were homebrewers, the Society shall facilitate networking among local brewers to build community leadership.

The Logan Square Draught Beer Preservation Society meets at area taverns irregularly, on a somewhat monthly basis.

The Society e-mail list is overseen and moderated by the Central Committee, and is used primarily to alert Society members of meetings, actions, events, and important issues of the day. At its sole discretion, the CC may choose to limit list chatter to discourage over-use of e-mail and promote more face-to-face tavern interaction among our Society.

Tour de Biergarten: ACCEPTING SUBMISSIONS

The Central Committee has determined that the 2nd Annual Tour de Biergarten will take place on Saturday, July 22.

The Central Committee kindly requests that each neighorhood society submit atl least 2 recommended biergartens for inclusion on the itinerary....
